The LNG-powered MSC World Asia has embarked on its first sea trials ahead of delivery, marking an important milestone before the vessel enters service later this year.
The vessel, built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique (CdA) for MSC Cruises, is equipped with a new-generation four-stroke engine developed within the GREEN RAY project by Wärtsilä. While sea trials are an important step in preparing the vessel for service, GREEN RAY’s work will continue beyond this phase, with emissions from the engine planned to be studied during vessel operations in early 2027.
As more LNG-powered ships enter the global fleet, reducing methane slip is increasingly important. Through the development, demonstration and real-world assessment of new technologies, GREEN RAY is working with industry partners to reduce methane emissions from LNG-powered vessels and support lower-emissions maritime transport.
